Staff volunteering session gets everything shipshape for Sea Scouts

Some of our senior team members recently swapped the world of modular buildings for an afternoon of volunteering in aid of 5th Worcester Sea Scouts.

A total of 16 Leadership Team members headed to the group’s base in Park View Terrace, Worcestershire where they cleaned and organised all of the equipment in the Scout Hut and helped transform the surrounding area.

By the end of the session, the team had bailed out, and pressure washed all of the boats and built new racking to neatly store the boats away, removed old fencing, tidied the yard and organised all of the kits.

Positive impact

Jim Cowell, our UK Technical Director and Scout Leader at 5th Worcester Sea Scouts, explains: “It was brilliant, everyone’s hard work has made a real difference.

“It means the people that volunteer at the Sea Scouts regularly can concentrate on spending quality time with the children and teaching them valuable life skills.”

Mike Shakeshaft, our UK HSE Director, who was among the volunteers, says: “I really enjoyed being able to roll up my sleeves and spend a few hours helping out the local Sea Scouts. Between us, we managed to make such a difference to the group’s facilities, and we got to reinforce our company-wide commitment to social value and making a positive impact within the local community too.”

Ewelina Charczuk Shaw, Tom Courtney, Jim Cowell, Richard Dey, Sally Dickerson, Chris Dinham, Mat Gibbs, Andy Hardy, Andy Hirst, Ceredig Jones, Steve King, Lewis Maclean, Stewart Perry, Mike Shakeshaft, Jeff Weston and Ian Wilson took part in the volunteering session on September 9.

Group-wide volunteering target

Our parent company, Modulaire Group, has set a group-wide target of contributing 5,000 volunteering hours each year to support charities and community organisations. To help achieve this, our volunteering policy encourages employees to spend one additional day of paid leave annually taking part in non-profit, community or environmental projects. According to Modulaire Group’s latest ESGS Report, 5,442 volunteering hours were recorded last year – 885 of these hours were completed by Algeco UK staff.

In addition to the Paid Volunteer Programme, Algeco UK supports a chosen charity every year and has been supporting Dementia UK since June last year. This month (October), employees are being invited to walk or run at least 5km in support of World Mental Health Day on October 10 and help raise an additional £5,000 for Dementia UK.

Culture of care

Ceredig Jones, Algeco UK’s Chief Financial Officer, who also leads ESG & Sustainability in the UK, says: “We believe our responsibility extends beyond providing high quality modular solutions; it’s also about making a positive difference in the communities where we live and work. Volunteering is a powerful way for our people to share their time, skills and energy in support of causes that matter.

“By encouraging every employee to dedicate a day each year to community or environmental projects, and through Modulaire Group’s ambition of 5,000 volunteering hours annually, we’re building a culture of care and purpose that goes hand in hand with our business success.”

5th Worcester Sea Scouts, which has been running for 78 years, is one of the oldest Scout Groups in Worcestershire. More than 180 young people, aged between six and 18, take part in a wide range of Scouting activities Mondays to Fridays.
