Derby-based academy ‘delighted’ at new multi-million pound, state-of-the-art science block built by Algeco UK
Algeco UK has delivered a new modular school building for Saint Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy in Derby, a multi-million-pound, state-of-the-art science block designed and constructed using modern modular building methods. The two-storey facility supports the school’s expansion and demonstrates how modular buildings for education can provide high-quality, future-proofed learning environments in a faster and more sustainable way than traditional construction.
Algeco UK is a leading provider of permanent modular buildings, temporary accommodation and shipping containers, delivering turnkey construction expertise to sectors including education, retail, commercial, industrial, health, defence and justice.
Saint Benedict is one of many recent school building projects delivered by Algeco in the UK, as academies and local authorities continue to adopt modular construction to expand capacity, replace outdated facilities and support growing student numbers.
The new science block accommodates pupils across 12 classrooms in a standalone two-storey modular structure, replacing multiple older classrooms previously spread across the site. The new layout brings all science teaching, laboratories and prep rooms together in one dedicated building, improving learning flow, accessibility and departmental cohesion.
Pupils and teachers alike are delighted at Algeco UK’s work on the science block at St Benedict
Headteacher Hazel Boyce said:
“The new science block is incredible and a much-needed improvement at Saint Benedict. To have the whole department all together, under one roof is a dream come true.
“The benefit to our pupils is going to be immense and their delight at the new block is a joy to behold! The innovative design of the building coupled with the wide expanse of glass in all the labs makes it a beautiful environment in which to learn.”
Dr Mala Mistry, Director of Learning, Science at Saint Benedict, added:
“At last, the science department is together in our new science block! M block contains 12 bespoke laboratories, each fitted with an interactive whiteboard, and specialist prep rooms, this move will ensure that the science teachers are able to deliver the already robust curriculum in new and innovative ways.”
The project was delivered as a partnership between the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust and Derby City Council to help meet increasing demand for Year 7 places in the region. Algeco secured the project via negotiated contract, procured through the NHS-SBS framework, a route commonly used for modular school buildings and public-sector construction.
Algeco acted as Principal Design and Build Contractor, working with Watson Batty Architects and educational consultants Entrust, providing a full turnkey delivery including design, manufacture, groundworks, installation and fit-out.
As part of its platform-based modular construction approach, Algeco ensured the building was delivered with a strong low-carbon focus. The modular solution achieved significant reductions in both operational and embodied carbon, up to 70% lower than a traditional build, through design efficiency, factory-controlled manufacturing, reduced waste and smart material selection. Additional sustainability benefits were achieved through the installation of solar PV, high insulation values and the use of recycled materials.
Phil Pavey, Managing Director of Algeco Offsite Solutions said:
“The new science block was a sizeable project win for us. The client chose an Algeco turnkey solution because of our extensive experience in the education sector, along with the rapid build times possible through the use of our platform design approach.”
This project further demonstrates how modular school buildings can be delivered faster, more sustainably and with less disruption to teaching compared to traditional construction, while still offering high-quality, permanent facilities tailored to modern curriculum needs.
