School praises Algeco for rapid classroom turnaround following RAAC discovery

Algeco, Europe’s leading modular and offsite building solutions provider, has successfully supplied a turnkey modular accommodation solution to Woodkirk Academy in Leeds in just 6 weeks.

The requirement for temporary accommodation came about following discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in existing buildings at the school.

Woodkirk Academy is not alone - last year, over 100 UK schools were forced to close before the beginning of the autumn term due to the presence of unsafe Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in their buildings.

The Algeco accommodation solution at Woodkirk Academy is now providing much-needed teaching space, and allowing the school to remain fully open.

Algeco was selected by Woodkirk Academy to supply temporary accommodation as part of a wider solution because of the quality of its teaching spaces and ability to provide a turnkey solution in a matter of a few weeks.

The modular hire team supplied a number of fully-equipped, high-quality modular units to create spacious and comfortable classrooms.

They worked with the school to tailor the layout of the units to meet their specific needs.

Completing the whole project as a turnkey solution in less than 6 weeks from initial site visit in early December to the school having fully functional units by mid-January was a highly impressive outcome.

Joe Barton, CEO Principal at Woodkirk Academy was delighted with the end result, and commented: “As a company, Algeco has been efficient, responsive, communicative and has delivered to specification and to the original timescale. The team involved were more than accommodating and pulled out all the stops to make sure our needs were met. From the initial site visit, to having fully functional units by 16 January is absolutely amazing!”

She added: “The accommodation units are now fully installed and we used them for the first time on Tuesday for exams; for a careers event on Wednesday; and now as classrooms. This solution is already making a significant difference to what we can deliver, ensuring that the students at Woodkirk Academy receive the quality of education that we are known for.”

Algeco temporary classrooms are available in a whole range of configurations, offering light and airy, comfortable teaching spaces. Algeco is an approved DfE supplier and a member of the leading education procurement frameworks, such as Crown Commercial Service (CCS) and LHC Procurement Group.

The modules are stackable up to four storeys high, useful where available land is restricted. If the needs of the school change over time, it’s easy to add or remove modules or to reconfigure the space.

Algeco temporary classrooms are flexible and re-usable, meaning that there is minimal environmental impact. This re-usability and  recyclability, combined with energy efficiency, contribute to the Algeco ‘loops within loops’ model. This is at the heart of the company’s strategy, which employs circular economy principles to minimise waste throughout its whole operations and activities.

Algeco has been supplying temporary classrooms for hire into schools for 60 years. It has a highly experienced team of project managers that can advise on classroom layouts, and provide a single point of contact from start to finish.
