How to change a trough urinal cartridge
If your waterless urinal trough is starting to smell, draining slowly, or showing signs of leaking beneath the unit, it may be time to replace the valve/membrane cartridge.
A key sign of failure is a blocked or degraded GW6 membrane cartridge, which can lead to poor drainage, odours, and system failure if not replaced.
If the trough is blocked and not draining:
- Carefully remove any standing fluid and debris
- Wear appropriate PPE (gloves and eye protection)
- Avoid direct contact with waste water
Please note: Only take action if it is safe to do so.
- Remove any excess water and debris from the trough.
- Carefully remove the old GW6 membrane cartridge:
- First undo the centre screw on the top
- Then use grips to unscrew and remove the cartridge
- Clean the trough and trap housing using warm water only.
- Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, or acidic cleaners, as these can damage the system
- Insert the new cartridge firmly, ensuring it is fitted the correct way round
- Refit the guard securely
- Replacement cartridges are available through Algeco
Once the new cartridge has been installed:
- Clean and sanitise using Uridan spray
- Available through Algeco
Important cleaning advice
- Do not use urinal cubes in this type of system, as they can block the filter and pipework
- Only use approved cleaning products to maintain performance
- Pour a cup of clean water into the trough
- Check that the system drains correctly
- Ensure there are no leaks beneath the unit
We recommend inspecting and replacing the cartridge as required depending on usage and site conditions to ensure consistent performance.
